This workshop will examine how developers use marketing strategies to brand gentrifying spaces in a way that excludes longtime residents. Those residents, in addition to being physically pushed out, are emotionally and ideologically excluded. These sneaky marketing strategies are sure to include people of color so as to brand the companies and developments as inclusive and “diverse,” but they exclude poor people, large families, disabled people, queer people, and people of color who fall into those categories-- folks who are systematically denied their human rights to housing. If you’ve ever seen an advertisement for a new condo building in U Street or NE and thought, “Wow, that’s such an improvement!” this workshop is for you.
Workshop led by Clara Lincoln, ONE DC member and DC native. Co-hosted by Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) DC.
