The ONE DC Black Workers & Wellness Center is a member-led community & wellness space in Anacostia that builds racial & economic justice through popular education, building power for sustainable employment, the incubation of economic alternatives such as worker cooperatives, and the artistic expression of the struggle for liberation.
In 2017, after two years of grassroots fundraising efforts, ONE DC successfully purchased the former United Black Fund, Inc. building at 2500 MLK Jr Ave SE for $1.2 million. With the building purchased, we started fundraising to renovate the building and transform it into a community-controlled organizing hub in DC.
In 2018, we created the BWWC Space Planning Committee made up of ONE DC members, long-time DC residents, and partner organizations to provide input on the priorities and future uses of the space. ONE DC hired Emotive Architecture, a local Black-owned architecture firm based in Washington, D.C. to develop a design and architectural plans for the renovation of the building. In 2019, we hired Capital Construction Group, a local Black-owned general contractor to lead the renovation.
The Black Workers & Wellness Center has now officially re-opened for our community. We are continuing to fundraise to set up a long-term sustainability fund for operations of the building.
