June 26th, 2007 - Activists Head to Mayor Fenty's Office

Following a successful meeting with Deputy Mayor Neil Albert, during which he promised longtime Shaw residents to provide a $7.8 million subsidy to fund permanently affordable housing in the neighborhood, ONE DC members who could not attend and had promised to occupy the Executive Suite until the subsidy guarantee was provided made the trip to the Wilson Building a day later to thank the Deputy Mayor's staff for their responsiveness and urge them to continue listening to the voices of low-income activists.

Sep 12 - Today ONE DC Anacostia resident leaders announced the preliminary results of their door-to-door survey of Ward 8 households regarding the future of Poplar Point.

A few highlights of the survey results, which may contradict conventional wisdom:

  • 64% of the residents surveyed heard about the proposed redevelopment from the interviewer, at the moment of the survey (and the reason we also created an informational flyer about Poplar Point).
  • 87% were opposed to building another stadium (no matter how it was financed, according to our interviewers).
  • 81% were opposed to any kind of market-rate development at Poplar Point.
  • 72% were in favor of restoring Poplar Point as a full part of Anacostia Park.
  • 79% thought all new housing units should be affordable to people making less than $30,000 a year.

Help preserve Anacostia Park from developers who want to build a soccer stadium for DC United. ONE DC is working with residents who do not want to be displaced or face economic disadvantages due to a new soccer stadium. The owners of DC United want the city to contribute toward infrastructure costs to complement their $150,000 bid.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Latino Co-op Celebrates First Birthday

On July 21, 2007, the co-op commemorated its first birthday and celebrated the approval of a sizable loan for much needed building renovations. Good food and good music did not keep members from reflecting on the co-op's core values: shared leadership, participatory democracy, mutual assistance, and the rights of the collective over those of the individual.

Members shared their visions for the co-op's long-term growth. Ideas included guaranteeing the co-op's affordable housing costs; founding worker-owned businesses; starting a community clinic; and even planting a co-op garden on the roof.
