Martin Luther King, Jr Coop Celebrates First Birthday On July 21, 2007, the coop commemorated its first birthday and celebrated the city's approval of a sizable loan for much needed building renovations. Good food and good music did not keep coop members from reflecting on the values that go into developing a coop: shared leadership, participatory democracy, mutual assistance, and the rights of the collectivity over those of the individual. Part of the afternoon was spent by members sharing their visions for the Coop's long-term growth. Ideas included the guaranteeing the coop's affordable housing costs, the founding of worker-owned businesses, starting a community clinic, and even a planting a coop garden on the roof.
