Education: Combahee Drylongso Community Organizing Institute - Introduction

150_sharing.jpg

Combahee Drylongso Community Organizing Institute (formerly Kressley Institute) is ONE DC's three year pilot program in training local grassroots organizers.

ONE DC is seeking talented individuals with a recognized commitment to community organizing, policy change, and a social-justice based education process to submit applications for Combahee Drylongso Institute. The Institute is designed to support and train local organizers through an intensive 6-day training institute, and seeks to build the capacity of individuals and/or organizations working district-wide around resident-led campaign development and action planning.

While the Institute is seeking individuals who have an interest in professional community organizing, we are especially interested in community leaders who are working at the grassroots level to build the collective power and leadership of their fellow community members. The training is based on the “know-why” and “know-how” approach concentrating on: Conceptual skills (i.e. values, theory and culture); and Practical skills (i.e. hands-on training, campaign development, action planning, coalition building, behavior driven performance and outcome based results, etc.). The Institute will focus on the use of progressive and strategic community organizing, policy change, and popular education.

Project Description

The Institute is designed to support and train local organizers through an intensive 6-day intensive training (with some evenings), which will be followed by monthly check-ins and year round technical support. While the Institute is seeking those individuals who have an interest in pursuing professional community organizing, we are especially interested in community leaders who may not work within formal organizing institutions, but are working at the grassroots level to build the collective power and leadership of their fellow community members. For those 20 – 25 participants who are selected, their training will concentrate on:

  • Conceptual skills (i.e. values, theory and culture of residents)
  • Practical skills (i.e. door-to-door organizing, recruitment, campaign development, action planning, and coalition building)

Answering the Need for an Organizing Institute in DC
Thursday, 28 February 2008 20:04

75_kressdes.jpgONE DC has developed a three year pilot initiative that will train local organizers through an intensive institute and year round technical support. Additionally, in years 2-3, ONE DC will develop more intensive technical assistance relationships with local organizations to increase their capacity to integrate organizers and organizing into their organizational culture and workplan. Simultaneously, ONE DC will develop relationships in the funding and evaluation community to demonstrate the impact of this work on the District's neighborhoods, and to create more sustainable funding streams for organizing in the District.

Progressive community organizing and popular education are at nascent stages in the District of Columbia. Given the city’s long history of colonialism, direct federal control, and racial and class segregation, generations of residents have learned to live under a system that debilitated the natural process of building a true grassroots-led voice.

The 2008 Kressley Organizing Institute
Friday, 29 February 2008 00:00

The Kressley Organizing Institute will feature two tracks this year. The first is aimed at those who are currently organizing, new to organizing, or who are thinking about entering the field. Sessions will be designed to cover the basics of organizing, from door-knocking to how to do one-on-ones to campaign planning and strategy development. There will also be sessions on organizing theory, including exploration of various topics related to culture, organizing models, and systemic and structural oppression. The second track is designed for experienced organizers who want to strengthen their skills and deepen their analysis. Sessions will utilize peer-to-peer learning, popular education, and field experience. Participants in the advanced track will share strategies and experiences, explore best practices and models, and further develop their practical skills and theoretical framework. For those applicants interested in the advanced track, submit an additional narrative.

MOSAICA & the Highlander Research & Education Center will be active partners in the development and implementation of Technical Assistance to participants.
