ONE DC : About Us : Our Methods - Introduction
We were meeting people on their terms, not ours. If they were out in
the field picking cotton, we would go out on that field and pick with
them...
...Before we ever got around to saying what we had to say, we
listened. And in the process we built up both their trust in us and
their confidence in themselves.
John Lewis, SNCC

Community Organizing moves forward all of ONE DC’s (formerly Manna CDC)
goals, programs and projects. ONE DC staff accompany Shaw & DC
residents and stakeholders through varying consciousness-raising,
political education, and strategic & action planning activities so
that they can effectively and democratically voice the needs of ONE
DC’s constituency.
ONE DC's progressive community organizing values stem from the
principles put forth by SNCC and other national and international
people-led movements for justice and human rights.
Community Organizing Goals
- With direct resident input, create organizing opportunities and initiatives rooted in ONE DC’s values & approach
- Place
key ONE DC partners and resident leaders in strategic positions that
increase resident voice and power in community initiatives and key
decision-making Boards
- Using a popular education and a
participatory process that centers on community input and leadership
development, create and advance housing and economic development
policies that produce measurable and specific (quantitative &
qualitative) results
- Identify and accompany potential leaders in building a sustainable resource pool that drives ONE DC’s work forward

ONE DC uses Popular Education techniques and
values for leadership development and skills building. Popular
Education is a values-changing process based on the ideals of equity
and justice for change.
It is inclusive and continuous, bringing people
together in a safe and supportive space to discuss and analyze
individual and community problems and their root causes. Finally, it
helps such groups identify short and long-term actions they need to
take to remedy identified problems.
